Trail: Scafell Pike (0)
Contributor: lochaberguides Activity Type: Hiking Difficulty: Average Distance: 2.616 mi (4.209 km)
Description: Start at the campsite at Wasdale head, a large car park just next to the Wasdale Inn. Cross the Green and head south following the path. After about 30 min you'll reach the Lingmell Gill, a small river crossing. After this is the steepest part of the route, brown tongue, a long stepped path. The angle eases and you reach an area called Hollow Stones, a small boulder field. Pick your way through this and head up towards the col between Lingmell and Scafell Pike. The path becomes rocky and quite rough now but there are many small cairns marking the route. Ascend the broken rock and scree to the summit, marked by a large platform and cairn. Take great care on descent as there are several paths off from the summit. I tend to follow a bearing of 300 degrees for about 150m to reach the large cairn below the summit and the path is quite easy to locate from here but be careful. Descend the same way, taking car on Brown Tongue if wet as the steps can be very slippy. If in spate the Lingmell Gill van be difficult to cross.
