Trail: Glen Tanar (0)
Contributor: markroberts Activity Type: Trail Running Difficulty: Hard Distance: 13.74 mi (22.112 km)
Description: There are few places in the UK more wild and remote than Cairngorms National Park. This route provides a real taste of adventure with woodland trails, open moorland and a thrilling river crossing. From the start, ford the Water of Tanar via a lovely stone bridge before passing the tiny Chapel of St. Lesmo. Cross over a second bridge, passing a small fishing loch and continue up the track. After about 3 miles, you will eventually come out of the wonderful Scots Pine forest into open moorland, with some spectacular views of Mount Keen (the most easterly Munro in the UK), rising up at the end of the glen. At about 6.5 miles in you will need to cross over the river (no bridge - so be careful and keep your shoes on!) and head up the track on the hill. Dropping down and re-entering the forest, you will turn right onto another good quality track, cross another stone bridge and make your way back past the chapel to the car park.
