The great outdoors offers so many opportunities to keep active and enjoy some amazing scenery. Some of the terms used can be a bit ambiguous though, especially to those new to the field. Here, we will attempt to clear up the differences between some popular outdoor activities.
Hillwalking is the simple pastime of walking up a hill or mountain with the aim of reaching its summit. This is very similar to hiking except that it is solely based on reaching an area of higher elevation.
Scrambling is similar to hillwalking in that it involves the goal of reaching the summit of a hill or mountain. It differs though because scrambling trails are more rugged and hands must sometimes be employed in order to reach the final destination.
Rock Climbing is like extreme scrambling involving steeper inclines, cliff faces and the like. Often additional equipment such as ropes, karabiners and harnesses must be used as there is a higher risk of injury.
